This course is suitable for a partnership of schools or chain of academies and for a central training session where many schools are represented.

The significance of governance at all times, but particularly when a school is inspected, cannot be over stated. The working relationship between the head/principal and the chair of governors is crucial in facilitating effective governance based on clarity around professional boundaries.

In the context of the core functions of governance and features of effective governance, this seminar is designed to enable paired heads and principals/chairs to:

  • Cross reference the core functions of governance to the Competency framework for governors and the Ofsted evaluation schedule
  • review the impact of their boards and SLTs on school improvement
  • explore strategies for building the capacity and impact of their boards and SLTs
  • action plan

It is based on the 6 features of effective governance set out in the Governance Handbook and the Competency framework for governance.

Each Chair and Head/Principal pair will be asked to bring relevant documents to the session. These documents will not be shared with others.

There will also be a short questionnaire to complete in advance
