Governor Appointment Process

Launch of a New Appointments Policy and Application Procedure

Dear school leaders and governors,

Firstly, a very Happy New Year from all of us in the Governance Team. Secondly, I am writing with exciting news about our new, streamlined appointment process for recruiting and reappointing LDBS foundation governors.

Please click on this link to read our brand-new Appointments Policy. In this policy we set out our vision for LDBS foundation governance as a form of lay ministry; a calling; a way in which Christians can express their vocation to follow Christ by serving their local community. There is also a new application form on our website to support the policy, which must be used from today onwards.

Applications will no longer go to a Panel but be determined by the Governance Team on a weekly basis, audited termly by the Governance Committee. There will still be the same level of scrutiny and expectation regarding quality of supporting paperwork submitted, but this should make the process much quicker from start to finish.

Another big change is that there is now a category for those who are not regular worshippers in the Church of England but can demonstrate a strong commitment to the tenets of the Apostles’ Creed. Anyone who applies under this category will be required to have a faith interview with the incumbent of the parish connected to the school (ex-officio foundation governor). Please note that LDBS will not appoint to this category unless at least half of the total number of foundation roles are filled by regular worshippers and appointment to this category will be in rare circumstances.

Another significant change is the way we prepare foundation governors for the role. All newly appointed foundation governors will be required to attend foundation governor induction, led by LDBS within 6 months of their approval as a governor, or the next available course, whichever is sooner. The induction is split into two sections; the first section is training in preparation for the LDBS foundation role; the second part is a short service of commissioning led by a member of the clergy.

We would be delighted to receive any feedback you have, as we strive to make our processes easier and more efficient.

Yours sincerely,
Sam Elms
Head of Governance, LDBS
